What is UN Millennium Declaration of 2000?

On 8th September 2000, Heads of State and representatives of the Governments of 189 countries adopted the Millennium Declaration at the United Nations Summit in New York.

The Declaration outlines the central concerns of the global community-peace, security, development, environmental sustainability, human rights and democracy-and articulates a set of inter-connected and mutually reinforcing goals into a global agenda for development.

The goals, called the Millennium Development Goals, put human development as its main focus. Each goal has been translated into one or more targets and its benchmark indicators.

Eight important chapters and key objectives covered in the UN Millennium Declaration of 2000 are-

1. Values and Principles (Freedom , equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature and shared responsibility).
2. Peace, security and Disarmament.
3. Development and poverty eradication.
4.Human rights, Democracy and Good governance.
5. Protecting the vulnerable.
6. Meeting Special needs of Africa.
