It is a form of society where the creation, distribution and usage of information depends on Information Technology (IT) for wider reach. It is seen as the successor to industrial society.
Fritz Machlup described the term "Information Society" in 1933.
The newer technologies should help close the gaps and disparities in availing socio- economic opportunities, even more so convergence of communication technologies, making simultaneous exchange of voice, visuals and data and interactivity between people and regions.
